FAIRFAX, VA — For those of a certain age, you probably remember a little ditty that accompanied a car commercial in the 1970s: "Baseball, hot dogs, apple pie and Chevrolet." Well, putting the make of the vehicle aside, the first three items indeed have come to encapsulate an essence of America that may be idyllic but nonetheless rings true for a lot of folks.

All of which us brings us to Independence Day. For many, a Fourth of July picnic simply wouldn't be complete without, yes, hot dogs but perhaps more importantly, apple pie. Yep, apple pie. Straight out of a Norman Rockwell painting.
