The Garden Club of Fairfax Donates Kaleidoscope Sculpture to Meadowlark Botanical Gardens

Fairfax, Virginia, Tuesday, April 14, 2026 –The Garden Club of Fairfax kicked off their Centennial Celebration with the dedication of a Kaleidoscope Sculpture donated to Meadowlark Botanical Gardens in Vienna, Virginia.

Sculptor Robert C. Anderson of Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, introduced his garden kaleidoscopes in 1997. They remain a popular and primary body of work with outdoor installations nationally in main street locations, theme parks, and botanic gardens. “This interactive living sculpture brings people together in a shared experience. It is an opportunity to unplug and experience the beauty and awe of flowering plants reflected in a timeless kaleidoscopic image. Look through the viewing scoped, turn the bowl of flowers, and share your experience with the people around you” Anderson states.

The kaleidoscope is an apt and timely symbol for the Garden Club of Fairfax as it celebrates its 100th birthday. It embodies and mirrors the ever-changing and endless possibilities contained in the legacy of a century of club experiences, events, and member interactions. Like the kaleidoscope each one of us has unique talents and personality characteristics we bring to the club. The colors and shapes generated within the instrument itself could represent unique member personalities, thoughts, memories, and ideas. In different lights or environments these patterns are revealed yet can change.

Metaphorically, the kaleidoscope also represents a whole host of occurrences like important club events, member life changes, as well as changing perspectives and new directions and knowledge.

The mission of The Garden Club of Fairfax is to stimulate the knowledge and love of gardening and flower arranging; to share horticultural knowledge; to restore, improve and protect the quality of the environment; to encourage conservation of natural resources; and to aid in the restoration and preservation of historic gardens in Virginia. The Garden Club of Fairfax is a member of the Garden Club of Virginia.
