Hospital Discharge Of Coronavirus Patients In Virginia Tops 6,000

A total of 6,011 COVID-19 patients have been discharged from hospitals in Virginia since the coronavirus crisis began three months ago.

VIRGINIA — The Virginia Department of Health on Tuesday reported 841 additional cases of the new coronavirus, 15 new deaths and 76 new hospitalizations. The latest cumulative totals are 46,239 cases of the coronavirus, 1,407 deaths and 4,770 hospitalizations.

The Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association reported 1,362 people with pending or confirmed coronavirus test results currently hospitalized on Tuesday, down nine from Monday. A total of 6,011 COVID-19 patients have been discharged from hospitals.

As of Tuesday, 186 COVID-19 patients were using ventilators, down from 188 on Monday. A total of 584 hospital patients are using ventilators as of Tuesday, down significantly from the 631 on Monday. Total ventilator use among 2,956 available ventilators represents 20-percent use in Virginia. No hospitals are experiencing difficulty obtaining or restocking protective gear or other medical supplies in the next 72 hours.

The number of coronavirus cases at long-term care facilities totaled 4,973 as of Tuesday and the number of people who have died at these facilities had reached 796, or 57 percent of the state's total number of deaths from the coronavirus.

The Northern Virginia region accounted for 362, or 43 percent of Virginia's 841 new cases of the coronavirus as of Tuesday, according to the Virginia Department of Health. Those new cases lifted the region to a total of 25,503 positive cases of the coronavirus, or 55 percent of the state total. For the past two days, the number of new positive cases in Northern Virginia has represented a much smaller percentage than the 55 percent of all coronavirus cases.

Fairfax County, the state's most populous jurisdiction, now has 11,426 positive cases and 391 deaths. Prince William County has the second highest number of cases, at 5,724, and 104 deaths.

While overall positive coronavirus case numbers have increased with more testing, Virginia Department of Health data shows the percentage of positive results are continuing a decline that started in the middle of April.

Here are the latest cumulative case updates for our coverage areas as of Tuesday:

  • Alexandria: 2,000 cases, 193 hospitalizations, 44 deaths; increase of 19 cases, one hospitalization.
  • Arlington County: 2,133 cases, 377 hospitalizations, 117 deaths; increase of 10 cases, one hospitalization and one death.
  • Fairfax County: 11,426 cases, 1,358 hospitalizations, 391 deaths; increase of 207 cases, 29 hospitalizations and four deaths.
  • Fairfax City: 67 cases, eight hospitalizations, six deaths; no changes.
  • Falls Church: 55 cases, 11 hospitalizations, eight deaths; no changes.
  • Loudoun County: 2,636 cases, 165 hospitalizations, 67 deaths; increase of 25 cases, two hospitalizations and one death.
  • Manassas: 1,135 cases, 70 hospitalizations, 11 deaths; increase of 30 cases and two hospitalizations.
  • Manassas Park: 327 cases, 32 hospitalizations, six deaths; increase of 10 cases and one hospitalization.
  • Prince William County: 5,724 cases, 478 hospitalizations, 104 deaths; increase of 61 cases and six hospitalizations.
  • Fredericksburg: 172 cases, 22 hospitalizations, no deaths; increase of six cases.
  • Spotsylvania County: 586 cases, 42 hospitalizations, seven deaths; increase of 15 cases and one hospitalization.
  • Stafford County: 733 cases, 75 hospitalizations, five deaths; increase of nine cases, one hospitalization and one death.
