I-66 Delays Expected During Overnight Hours Near Waples Mill Road In Fairfax County

VDOT work crews will be closing lanes and stopping traffic on I-66 in both directions overnight Thursday through Saturday in Fairfax County.

FAIRFAX CITY, VA — Travelers on I-66 near Route 50 in Fairfax may want to find an alternate route later this week during overnight hours. Virginia Department of Transportation work crews will be closing lanes in both directions for bridge beam installation for the new Waples Mill Road Bridge.

On Thursday, I-66 East from Route 50 to Waples Mill will be reduced to a single lane from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. In addition, there will be periodic stoppages of up to 20 minutes. Drivers can also expect intermittent stoppages between midnight and 4 a.m. on the ramps from Route 50 East to I-66 East and Route 50 West to I-66 West. The stoppages will allow crews to lift beams into place

On Friday and Saturday, drivers can expect traffic to be limited to a single lane from 10 p.m.to 7 a.m.,on I-66 West from west of Jermantown Road to Waples Mill Road. Traffic will be stopped for periods of 30 minutes during the overnight hours to allow for the installation of bridge beams.

In the event of inclement weather, the bridge beam installation will be rescheduled.

The work at Waples Mill Road Bridge is part of the ongoing Transform 66 Outside the Beltway project. When the work is finished, pedestrians and bicyclists will be able use the bridge's shared-use path and sidewalk, which will connect to another path being built along I-66.
