I-66 West Lane Shifts, Closures At Route 50 Pushed Back 1 Week
VDOT is delaying by one week an overnight lane shift and associated road closures on I-66 between Route 50 and the Fairfax County Parkway.
FAIRAX, VA — Virginia Department of Transportation pushed back by one week its plans to shift a new roadway configuration on westbound I-66 lanes between Route 5o and the Fairfax County Parkway (Route 286), according to a release.
Rather than taking place this Saturday as originally planned, the roadwork will now occur during the overnight hours of Saturday, July 24. That's when VDOT will move all westbound lanes between routes 50 and 286 to a new roadway on the outside of I-66.
To facilitate this move, VDOT will be closing I-66 West ramps to and from Route 50, as well as ramps from I-66 West to Monument Drive and Stringfellow Road. VDOT will also be detouring traffic via Route 50 and West Ox Road (Route 608)

Drivers can expect additional traffic shifts this year to occur along east and westbound I-66 between Lee Highway (Route 29) in Gainesville and the Capital Beltway (I-495). By shifting traffic to new roadway along I-66, VDOT will be able to begin construction on the new I-66 Express Lanes, which will run down the center of the highway.
Motorists traveling on I-66 during the nighttime hours of July 24 should expect delays and may wish to seek alternate routes.

All roadwork is weather dependent and may be rescheduled if necessary, according to VDOT. More detailed information about the July 24 lane shifts, closures, and detours on I-66 can be found on the VDOT website.
