Judge Accepts Insanity Plea In Fairfax Nonprofit CEO Killing: Report

Joshua Danehower, 37, was charged in the 2022 murder of Gret Glyer, the CEO of fundraising platform DonorSee.

FAIRFAX, VA — A judge on Thursday accepted a plea deal that found the man accused of killing a Fairfax nonprofit CEO not guilty by reason of insanity, according to a report.

Joshua Danehower, 37, was charged in the 2022 murder of Gret Glyer, the CEO of fundraising platform DonorSee. Authorities said Danehower shot Glyer 10 times while he was asleep in bed, resulting in his death.

This week, a judge ordered that Danehower be moved from a jail cell to a mental health facility rather than face a criminal trial or prison time, WUSA9 reported. The ruling followed a plea agreement reached between defense attorneys and prosecutors after clinicians determined Danehower was legally insane at the time of the killing.

Danehower was taken into custody at Dulles Airport, where he worked at FedEx, four days after the July 2022 shooting.

According to court documents obtained by FOX 5, Glyer’s wife was Danehower’s ex-girlfriend and he wanted to reconnect with her before the shooting.

Former Fairfax City Police Capt. Jeff Hunt had previously described Danehower as an acquaintance of the Glyer family. NBC 4 said the Glyers and Danehower also attended The Falls Church Anglican church together.

"There is no reason to believe he [Danehower] was colluding with anyone, and we believe he acted alone," Hunt said.

Police said Glyer's wife, Heather, was lying next to him when the shooting occurred. The couple's two young children were also in the house at the time.

"Mr. Glyer’s wife and children were escorted by officers from the home unharmed," police said in a news release.

The decision by the judge to accept the insanity plea deal sparked anger among Glyer's family, many of whom attended the hearing on Thursday.

"If you encounter Danehower on the streets, believe me, you are not safe," Gizan Glyer said after the hearing, according to WUSA9. "Just like on June 24, 2022, evil has won today."
