Labor Day 2026: What's Open, Closed In Fairfax City; Annual Car Show Returns

FAIRFAX CITY, VA — Labor Day weekend traditionally marks the unofficial end of summer, and Fairfax City residents will see government offices and other services close or operate on modified schedules Monday.

Labor Day falls on Monday, Sept. 7, in 2026. Fairfax City government offices, courts and DMV Select will be closed, while CUE Bus will operate on a Saturday schedule.

The holiday won't mean a quiet day in downtown Fairfax, however. The 27th annual Labor Day Car Show will take over downtown from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday.

Labor Day Car Show Returns Downtown

The annual show is jointly produced by the City of Fairfax and Clifton Lions Club and will feature antique and classic vehicles, foreign and custom cars, street rods, muscle cars, trucks and motorcycles.

The free event will also include food vendors and a children's area. Although admission is free, spectators are encouraged to make a donation.

Proceeds from the show benefit local charitable organizations, with Life with Cancer and Cloverleaf Equine Center serving as the major recipients this year. Organizers say 100 percent of the proceeds will be donated.

The show will be held in downtown Fairfax, centered around 4081 University Drive.

Here's what else residents should know about Labor Day closures and schedule changes:

What's Open And Closed

Fairfax City government offices: Closed Monday, Sept. 7.

Fairfax County government offices: Closed Monday.

Fairfax County Public Schools: Students get a four-day weekend. Schools are closed Friday, Sept. 4, and Monday, Sept. 7, for Labor Day break. Both are holidays for all FCPS personnel.

Courts: Courts will be closed Monday for Labor Day, including Fairfax County Circuit Court.

DMV Select: Fairfax City DMV Select will close at noon Friday, Sept. 4, and remain closed Monday for Labor Day.

CUE Bus: CUE will operate Saturday service Monday. The city's regular Saturday service hours are 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Fairfax Museum and Historic Blenheim: Both will be closed Monday.

George Mason Regional Library: The library will be closed Monday along with all Fairfax County Public Library branches.

Metro: Metrorail and Metrobus will operate on regular Sunday schedules Monday. Metrorail will operate from 6 a.m. to midnight.

Regular fares will be in effect. Parking at Metro-owned garages and lots will be free for Metro riders.

MetroAccess subscription trips will be canceled for the holiday. Customers who need MetroAccess service Monday should make a separate reservation.

Fairfax County Park Authority: Recreation centers will be open from 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday, with drop-in childcare closed.

The nearby Jefferson Falls Mini Golf course will be open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Other Park Authority facilities will operate on varying schedules. Lake Fairfax Park's visitor center, for example, will be open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., while nature centers and historic sites will be closed.

There will be no Park Authority land, fitness or aquatic classes at recreation centers during Labor Day weekend, Sept. 5-7. Resource management and lakefront park programs will be held as scheduled.

Fairfax City trash and recycling: There will be no city collection Monday. Monday and Tuesday routes will both be collected Tuesday, Sept. 8. Yard waste collection may be delayed, and residents should leave their yard waste at the curb until it is collected.

Fairfax County trash and recycling: County collection customers will have regular service Monday. Residents with private collection should check with their hauler for possible schedule changes.

The I-66 Transfer Station and I-95 Landfill Complex recycling and disposal centers will be open Monday.
