Lady Cavs Rev Up to Match Madison in Regionals

Cavaliers prepare for the regional tournament.

The W.T Woodson Lady Cavaliers celebrated their spot as No. 1 seed in the Patriot District after two big shutout wins over Edison and West Potomac, but a stunning 2-0 loss to South County kept them from winning the district title.

Still, they will advance to the regional round-of-16 to host the Madison Warhawks.

At 10-2-3, the Lady Cavs are amidst the favorites to make a run at the state tournament.  To do so, they will need their defense to hold strong. So far so good as they recorded nine shutouts in 14 games this season.  They will look to junior keeper Jessica Ferrari, who came up huge in games against the region's best, with a combined 25 saves against Robinson and Stone Bridge earlier in the year.

On the other side of the ball, the Lady Cavs need a strong performance from Elizabeth Gaski, who leads the team with eight goals and is second in assists (with five).

The Madison defense also has shut out nine opponents and is considered to have one of the region’s best defenses.  With much of their attention on Gaski, Teresa Frutcherman and Marlee Stynchula (six goals each) should have opportunities to score.
