Delays, Closures Expected To Start This Weekend At I-66/Nutley Street Interchange

FAIRFAX CITY, VA — Starting this weekend, drivers in traveling through the I-66/Nutley Street intersection in Fairfax County will encounter a new traffic pattern, part of which is expected to last until June.

Virginia Department of Transportation work crews will be shifting travel lanes on Nutley Street and closing the ramp from Nutley Street South to I-66 West starting Friday.

Drivers on southbound Nutley Street will need to travel an additional 500 feet to turn right onto a temporary ramp to I-66 West. This detour is expected to last about three weeks.

VDOT will be shifting travel lanes in both directions on Nutley Street to the east side of the bridge over I-66 in order to create a work zone. Two travel lanes will remain open in both directions and pedestrians will also be directed to the east side of the bridge.

The new traffic patter will remain through June and will allow VDOT to finish work on the new Nutley Street Interchange and shared-use path tunnel.

The roadwork is weather-contingent. If necessary, the work will be delayed until March 18-21.

This weekend, VDOT will be closing the ramp to I-66 West from southbound Nutley Street and shifting travel lanes in both directions of Nutley Street to the east side of the bridge over the highway. (VDOT)
VDOT will also be implementing other closures and new traffic patterns this weekend at the I-66/Nutley Street interchange to facilitate the work described above.

Beginning at 10 p.m. on Friday and continuing through 5 a.m. on Monday, I-66 West travelers wishing to access southbound Nutley Street will be directed to continue west to the Vienna/Fairfax/GMU Station exit. Travelers will then take a right at the light onto Country Creek Road/Virginia Center Boulevard and follow it to Nutley Street.

To facilitate its other work, VDOT will be closing the ramp to southbound Nutley Street from I-66 West. Drivers will be directed further west to the Vienna/Fairfax/GMU Station exit. (VDOT)

VDOT will be making some other changes to the traffic flow on Nutley Street during overnight hours this weekend to facilitate the implantation of the temporary lane shifts.

Starting at 10 p.m. Friday and continuing through 5 a.m. on Monday, one lane of northbound Nutley Street will be closed to traffic.

In addition, the ramp to I-66 West from northbound Nutley Street will be closed from midnight to 4 a.m. on Friday and Saturday.

Drivers will be directed to continue north to the light at Virginia Center Boulevard and make a u-turn. They'll then take the ramp at the right to access I-66 West.
