Lar Lubovitch, hailed by The New York Times as “one of the 10 best choreographers in the world,” has been creating breathtaking dance for audiences across the globe for the past 45 years. His stellar troupe, Lar Lubovitch Dance Company, returns to George Mason University’s Center for the Arts in Fairfax with an exquisite evening of contemporary dance on Friday, Oct. 25, 2013 at 8 p.m.
The program for this evening includes 2011’s “Crisis Variations,” a work that earned Lubovitch the 20th annual prize for Best Choreography by the Prix Benois de la Danse at the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow (the first leader of an American dance company to receive this prestigious honor); 2012’s “Transparent Things,” a work inspired by Picasso’s 1905 painting “Family of Saltimbanques”; and the Washington, D.C. area premiere of 2013’s “Vez,” a reimagining of Lubovitch’s 1989 work “Fandango,” performed with a newly commissioned score by Randall Woolf.
Also, a special treat for Fairfax audiences, the company will perform a rare gem from the Lubovitch repertoire: the duet from 1986's "Concerto Six Twenty-Two," set to Mozart's Clarinet Concerto, written only months before the composer's death. George Mason University's Center for the Arts will be the only venue on the company's tour to have this beautiful work on its program.
Patrons have the option of attending a free pre-performance discussion 45 minutes prior to the performance on the Center's Grand Tier III. Susan Shields, director of George Mason University's School of Dance, was a member of the Lar Lubovitch Dance Company for eight years, and will give audiences unique insight into Lubovitch's work.
Tickets are $46, $38 and $23. Youth Discount: Half-price tickets for children and students through grade 12. Please call 888-945-2468, or visit cfa.gmu.edu or visit the Center for the Arts box office, open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Follow @GMU_CFA on Twitter and visit George Mason University's Center for the Arts on Facebook.
