Legacy of Literacy Program Promotes Enthusiasm for Reading

Assistance League of Northern Virginia provides over 700 books for local 3rd grade classrooms

Assistance League of Northern Virginia joined The National Assistance League's Legacy of Literacy campaign conducted in February. Assistance League® of Northern Virginia is one of 120 chapters across the country participating in this event. The local chapter focused on reading and writing with the writing theme of “Reading makes me happy because...”. Assistance League members visited 30 third grade classrooms in Northern Virginia to talk about reading and why it is so important. Members returned a few weeks later to hear the students’ responses. The students’ enthusiasm for reading was amazing! The chapter’s goal was to collect 600 books. A memorial fund created by the family of a longtime member enabled us to jumpstart our campaign. With the help of our members, family, friends, and our phenomenal community, we exceeded our goal and collected 712 books. Thanks to all who helped make our inaugural Legacy of Literacy campaign a huge success! Be on the lookout for our new wish list for children’s books.
