I hope everyone had a wonderful Independence Day! Between playing in the parade and helping to build some excitement for the fireworks display (1812 Overture always does the trick), the City of Fairfax Band had a very full day. Many thanks, as always, to the City of Fairfax for allowing us these opportunities since 1967!
This week features the highlight of our summer schedule: our annual Children’s Concert. Not only does it feature a music program designed exclusively for our younger audience members, but it also includes an “Instrument Petting Zoo.” Ever since my high school days at Lake Braddock, the Instrument Petting Zoo has been one of my favorite volunteer opportunities. There is something inspiring about watching and helping young kids discover the joy of playing music. Literally, you can watch the expression on their face change to pure delight as they squeak out even the faintest of notes. Granted, it’s much funnier when they make a loud noise!
I believe that, as with athletics, music and arts is something you cannot truly learn about (and enjoy) until you are an active participant. I also believe that sharing the gift of music and arts with someone takes your enjoyment and understanding to another level. So, for our band members getting out from behind a music stand to show a young person the joy of making noise (at least with a brass instrument), it’s a real treat!
I hope you all will be able to join us this evening at the Sherwood Center. Bring the kids, regardless of age, for an evening of fun, ice cream and, yes, joyful noise-making.
