Man Arrested In Alexandria Dies In Cell At Fairfax County Detention Center

FAIRFAX, VA — Fairfax County Police are investigating the death of 65-year-old inmate George Redmond, who was an inmate at the Adult Detention Center, according to police.

A deputy with the Fairfax County Sheriff's Office found Redmond unresponsive Monday morning in his single cell at the detention center. He was then taken to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, according to police.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will conduct an autopsy to determine the cause of death, but police say there were no signs of foul play.

Redmond had been in the detention center since March 25, when Alexandria City Police arrested and charged him with trespassing and destruction of property. Once he arrived at the detention center, he was also served with a failure to appear warrant from Fairfax County.

Detectives from the FCPD's Mayor Crimes Bureau are coordinating their investigation with the sheriff's office. As part of department policy, Fairfax police investigate all in-custody deaths at the detention center
