Mason Dining creates care packages for hospitals, nonprofits

Mason Dining spent this week creating meals and care packages for local healthcare workers and people in need.

Amid the COVID-19 crisis, the team at George Mason University Dining by Sodexo spent this week creating meals and care packages for local healthcare workers and people in need.

Nearly 200 individual meals of fresh baked ziti and thank you notes were prepared for the healthcare workers at local INOVA facilities.

A security guard at the INOVA Fairfax emergency room said, “We are so grateful, usually nice donations like this always go to the bigger hospitals, thank you for thinking of us.”

Mason Dining made over 100 care packages for FACETS, an organization which helps parents, their children and individuals who suffer the effects of poverty in Fairfax County. The care packages included recipe cards so those who receive them know how to use the ingredients.

“To see the rising devastation on the news and experiencing the bare shelves when I shop, it was more apparent than ever that our community needed us,” said Jennifer Curtis, resident dining general manager for Mason Dining.

Last week, Mason Dining managers came together to host a food bank for approximately 150 employees to stop by – five at a time to maintain social distance – and fill a huge reusable shopping bag full of groceries.

In addition to a bag of fresh produce, employees could select items like eggs, milk, bread, peanut butter, mac ‘n cheese, butter, cheese, and comfort food snacks.

One staffer said, “My mom is elderly and cannot leave the house. I’m okay. I brought her the bag to her doorstep. She says thank you. Thank you for feeding my mom.”
