Merrifield E-Scooter Rider Dies After April Crash At Gallows Road, Gatehouse Road
Merrifield rider died April 30 after an April 1 crash at Gallows and Gatehouse roads, according to police.
MERRIFIELD, VA — A man riding an e-scooter in Merrifield died weeks after he was struck by a car at Gallows Road and Gatehouse Road, Fairfax County police reported.
Police said officers responded to the crash April 1 at 11:22 p.m. Investigators determined the driver of a 2022 Toyota Corolla was traveling northbound on Gallows Road before Gatehouse Road. Mesfin Abay, 37, of Falls Church, was operating an e-scooter from west to east across Gallows Road at Gatehouse Road when he was struck by the vehicle, according to police.
Abay was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries, police said. The driver of the Toyota was not injured and remained at the scene.

On April 30, detectives were notified by the Medical Examiner’s Office that Abay died from injuries sustained in the crash, according to police.
Police did not identify the Toyota driver nor whether any charges have been filed.

Detectives are asking anyone with information about the crash to contact the FCPD’s Crash Reconstruction Unit at 703-280-0543. Tips also can be submitted anonymously through Crime Solvers by calling 1-866-411-TIPS (866-411-8477), police said.
The department’s release also said tipsters may submit information online or through the P3 Tips app by following the steps to “Fairfax Co Crime Solvers.” The release said anonymous tipsters are eligible for cash rewards and asked people to leave contact information if they want a detective to follow up.
