The Most Popular Halloween Candy In Virginia, DC 2018

WASHINGTON, DC — October is synonymous with many things, including candy. If you didn’t get your Halloween candy on sale after last year’s festivities, now is the time to start stocking up for trick-or-treaters that will show up at your door on Oct. 31.

As for what type of candy you want to dole out, northern Virginia and Washington, D.C., trick-or-treaters definitely have a favorite. Is this a region of chocolate lovers — think Hershey bar, Reese's Peanut Butter Cups or M&Ms — or are non-chocolate treats like Skittles, Lifesavers or candy corn more popular with kids?

CandyStore.com, a bulk candy delivering service, gathered 11 years of data to determine the three most popular Halloween candies in each state. The company says its results also depended on candy manufacturers and distributors to help verify its conclusions.

In Virginia, the most popular treat is Hot Tamales, followed by Snickers and Tootsie Pops, per CandyStore.com. And in Washington D.C., the classic M&Ms are No. 1, with Tootsie Pops and Candy Corn next on the list. The No. 1 choice last year in the Commonwealth went to Snickers, while M&Ms were the favorite a year ago in DC, as well.

In neighboring Maryland, the most popular candy is Milky Way, followed by Reese's Cups and Hershey Kisses.

Comedian Lewis Black has a whole rant about candy corn, which he describes as "which is neither candy, nor corn," and suggests all candy corn in existence was made in 1914 and recycled annually.
