On This Mother's Day

Alisa is a quiet girl originally from China, now living in the DC metro area. I've known her for over a decade. The only time I ever heard her speak with pure joy was when she showed me clothes she had carefully selected from Tyson's as holiday gifts for her mother.

"How can you be sure about the size?" I asked.

"My mom and I are exactly the same size — I can literally try them on for her!" she answered with a radiant smile.

For the past three weeks, that smile has vanished. Alisa has been in tears since learning her mother was arrested on April 15, along with sixteen other Falun Gong practitioners in Wuhan. As of May 1, at least five — including Alisa's mom — remained in custody. Their only "crime" is their faith in this peaceful meditation practice that was once China's most popular qigong discipline. Viewing it as an ideological threat, the CCP launched a sweeping crackdown in 1999 that continues today. In 2019, the independent China Tribunal concluded that forced organ harvesting had been carried out on a significant scale in China, with Falun Gong practitioners likely its primary victims.
