New Daily Coronavirus Cases In Virginia Double From A Month Ago
Virginia health officials reported 1,145 new coronavirus cases Tuesday, more than double the 7-day average of new cases from a month ago.
VIRGINIA — The Virginia Department of Health reported 1,145 additional coronavirus cases and 26 new deaths Tuesday. Cumulative cases across the state are up to 94,251, while the number of people who have died now stands at 2,244.
The 7-day average of new cases has seen a slight decline within the last week. As of Tuesday, the 7-day average of new cases was 1,037, compared to 552 a month ago on July 4. The average increased in much of July before falling again after reaching 1,100 cases on July 27.
There were 511 new cases in the eastern region of Virginia, 269 in the northern region, 146 in the central, 115 in the northwest, and 104 in the southwest.

The number of new deaths reflects daily reports to the Virginia Department of Health, not the actual date on a death certificate. VDH is also keeping track of deaths by date, but that data may be incomplete for recent weeks.
As of Tuesday, 1,164,515 nasal swab tests have been completed across Virginia, an increase of 12,911 from Monday. The statewide 7-day average of positive nasal swab tests was 7.2 percent on July 31 and has been in the 7-percent range for much of July.

Across Virginia, there were 1,255 COVID-19 patients as of Tuesday, up from 1,205 on Monday, according to the Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association. Using VDH data, the breakdown of patients by health region was 552 in the eastern region, 248 in the northern region, 225 in the central region, 174 in the southwest region and 103 in the northwest region.
The COVID-19 hospitalizations include 144 on ventilators and 282 in the intensive care units, according to the Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association. Among all hospital patients, ventilator use stands at 20 percent, and ICU occupancy is at 76 percent. The 2019 average for ICU occupancy was 67 percent.
No hospitals report difficulty Tuesday obtaining personal protective equipment or other medical supplies in the next 72 hours.
Virginia Beach reported the biggest increase in cases Tuesday, with 102, followed by 101 in Prince William County, 91 in Portsmouth, and 80 in both Fairfax County and Norfolk. Six of the 26 new deaths reported Tuesday were in Northern Virginia.

- Alexandria: 2,867 cases, 273 hospitalizations, 60 deaths; increase of 23 cases, four hospitalizations and one death.
- Arlington County: 2,973 cases, 436 hospitalizations, 136 deaths; increase of 28 cases.
- Fairfax County: 15,987 cases, 1,904 hospitalizations, 528 deaths; increase of 80 cases, four hospitalizations and five deaths.
- Fairfax City: 82 cases, 11 hospitalizations, seven deaths; no change.
- Falls Church: 58 cases, nine hospitalizations, five deaths; decrease of one case, one hospitalization and one death.
- Loudoun County: 5,093 cases, 339 hospitalizations, 113 deaths; increase of 34 cases and one death.
- Manassas: 1,614 cases, 118 hospitalizations, 20 deaths; increase of two cases.
- Manassas Park: 502 cases, 50 hospitalizations, seven deaths; increase of two cases.
- Prince William County: 9,089 cases, 788 hospitalizations, 173 deaths; increase of 101 cases and one hospitalization.
- Fredericksburg: 371 cases, 43 hospitalizations, two deaths; increase of three cases and one hospitalization.
- Spotsylvania County: 1,375 cases, 95 hospitalizations, 34 deaths; increase of 18 cases and two hospitalizations.
- Stafford County: 1,294 cases, 117 hospitalizations, seven deaths; increase of 11 cases and hospitalization.
