NoVA Leads State In New Coronavirus Cases, Hospitalizations

Northern Virginia overtook the state's southwest region Monday in number of new coronavirus cases and COVID-related hospitalizations.

VIRGINIA — For the second day in a row, the Virginia Department of Health on Monday reported 1,302 new coronavirus cases across the state. The seven-day average of new-cases is 1,437. A month ago on Oct. 9, the average was 995.

There has been an uptick of cases in Northern Virginia for over a week. The northern region led the state Monday with 374 cases, followed by 296 in the southwest region, 272 in the northwest region, 227 in the central region and 133 in the eastern region.

To show how cases are relative to population, VDH provides information on new cases per 100,000 people statewide and by locality. The total number of new cases per 100,000 people in the last 14 days is 225.4 in Virginia. The seven-day average of daily cases per 100,000 people was 16.9 Monday. A month ago on Oct. 9, the seven-day average of daily cases per 100,000 people was 11.7.

The seven-day average of positive PCR tests climbed to 6.1 percent as of Nov. 5 after being in the 5 percent and 4 percent range since Sept. 18.

Northern Virginia had been in the 4 percent range for much of October. The region is now at 6.1 percent as of Nov. 5.

The southwest region's seven-day average of 9.3 percent remains the outlier among regions. Other averages are 5.8 percent in the central region, 4.9 percent in the eastern region and 4.3 in the northwest region. Across Virginia, 2,802,850 PCR tests have been completed to date, an increase of 15,744 from Sunday.

On Monday, the number of COVID-19 patients in hospitals stood at 1,127. The seven-day average of patients is 1,066.7. Patients by region include 293 in the northern region, 281 in the southwest region, 226 in the central region, 183 in the eastern region, and 144 in the northwest.

The 1,127 statewide hospitalizations include 98 patients on ventilators and 214 in the intensive care units, according to the Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association. As of Monday, ventilator use among all hospital patients stands at 27 percent, and ICU occupancy is at 78 percent occupancy. No hospitals are reporting difficulty obtaining personal protective equipment or other medical supplies in the next 72 hours.

  • Alexandria: 4,517 cases, 334 hospitalizations, 76 deaths; increase of 18 cases and one hospitalization
  • Arlington County: 5,060 cases, 546 hospitalizations, 155 deaths; increase of 24 cases and one hospitalization
  • Fairfax County: 25,463 cases, 2,348 hospitalizations, 606 deaths; increase of 159 cases and 10 hospitalizations
  • Fairfax City: 173 cases, 16 hospitalizations, eight deaths; increase of four cases and one hospitalizations
  • Falls Church: 79 cases, 13 hospitalizations, seven deaths; no changes
  • Loudoun County: 8,413 cases, 505 hospitalizations, 134 deaths; increase of 77 cases
  • Manassas: 2,107 cases, 132 hospitalizations, 27 deaths; increase of 13 cases
  • Manassas Park: 674 cases, 58 hospitalizations, eight deaths; increase of four cases
  • Prince William County: 15,286 cases, 1,026 hospitalizations, 224 deaths; increase of 78 cases and one hospitalization
  • Fredericksburg: 619 cases, 54 hospitalizations, six deaths; increase of one case
  • Spotsylvania County: 2,633 cases, 159 hospitalizations, 55 deaths; increase of 15 cases
