Old Town Fairfax Roads Project Begins Monday

A month-long project to repair and replace bricks, concrete curb ramps and aprons in Old Town Fairfax begins 5 a.m. Monday.

FAIRFAX, VA — A month-long project to repair and replace bricks, concrete curb ramps and aprons in Old Town Fairfax begins 5 a.m. Monday, according to city officials. Roads affected: University Drive, Sager Avenue, Main Street, Chain Bridge Road and East Street.

Work is scheduled for weekdays from 5 a.m.- 3 p.m., excluding holidays — however, bricklaying also may take place on Saturdays, as well. The work will take place in phases to maintain pedestrian access to all buildings. During work hours, lane closures will be in place and at least one lane of traffic will remain open in each direction on Main Street and University Drive.

Phasing for University Drive is shown in the image above. Each phase is expected to take two to three days and will be completed before moving to the next:

RED: curb ramp at southwest corner of University Drive and Main Street, the University Drive entrance to Caribbean Corner and half of the entrance to the Joshua Coffer Gunnell Building, 4010 University Drive.

  • The entrance to Caribbean Corner is not wide enough to do in halves. This entrance will be closed for two days while it is being replaced. The public parking lot at Sager Avenue and University Drive will be open.

ORANGE: curb ramp at northwest corner of University Drive and Main Street, and half of the University Drive entrance to the Joshua Coffer Gunnell Building, 4010 University Drive.

YELLOW: curb ramp at the northeast corner of Sager Avenue and Main Street, half of the University Drive entrance to the Victorian Square Parking Garage, and curb ramp at the northeast corner of University Drive and Main Street.

BLUE: Half of the University Drive entrance to the Victorian Square Parking Garage, and curb ramp at southeast corner of University Drive & Main Street.

These four phases will complete work on University Dr and will be followed by work on Main Street.
