Old Town Traffic Study Planned for Fairfax City

Council to consider funding from Transportation Tax Fund dollars Tuesday night.

It may be time for a new direction in downtown traffic management. The city council will consider Tuesday whether to spend $14,841 for an Old Town Traffic Study.

The Old Town Traffic Study would evaluate the city roads for:

  • overall network operational performance measures,
  • intersection capacity,
  • traffic safety,
  • business access,
  • emergency vehicle access,
  • parking,
  • and pedestrian/bicycle accessibility.

The study will only evaluate existing conditions, according to a memo from City Manager Robert Sisson to council. A second phase of the study will be financed and performed separately, if necessary.

The study will be performed by transportation engineering consultants Sabra, Wang and Associated and financed from $14,841 from the Transportation Tax Fund. See all the details of the funding request.

The Connection wrote in August that the city switched to two-way streets in the downtown district eight years ago. “We never did an analysis of how well it’s worked,” Mayor Scott Silverthorne told the paper.
