Overnight Road Closures: VDOT To Demolish Route 50 Bridges Over I-66 This Week

Ramps will be closed and traffic diverted in the Fair Oaks area this week as VDOT demolishes two concrete bridges over I-66.

FAIRFAX, VA — Travelers in the Fair Oaks area can expect to encounter overnight road closures this week as the Virginia Department of Transportation continues demolishing the old Route 50 bridges over I-66, according to a release.

The roadwork is part of VDOT's ongoing project to add HOV lanes to I-66 outside the Capital Beltway.

VDOT will be instituting the following closures and changes to traffic flow beginning Tuesday night:

  • Eastbound Route 50 to eastbound I-66 will be closed from 12- 4 a.m., Tuesday through Thursday, and 12-5 a.m., on Friday and Saturday.
  • Eastbound drivers on Route 50 seeking to access I-66 eastbound will be directed past Route 50, so that they can perform a u-turn at the traffic signal at Waples Mill Road. they can then use the ramp on the right to access I-66 east.

Work crews will be use jackhammers, saw cutters, and hoe rams to demolish the concrete deck of both the eastbound and westbound bridges over I-66. Once they are done, they will begin removing the steel bridge beams. All work will be completed during overnight hours.
