PHOTOS: Woodson Scoreless Against W. Springfield at Homecoming

West Springfield 48 – W.T. Woodson 0

Friday night was homecoming for W.T. Woodson’s Cavaliers at Pat Cunningham Stadium. The community enjoyed pregame festivities, including food and fun at the “Pig Out” and a performance by the Marching Cavaliers Band. Such was not the case on the field, however, as the Cavs were shutout by West Springfield 48 - 0. The loss drops Woodson to 0 – 5, while the Spartans move to 3 – 2.

Coming off last week’s fine outing against R.E. Lee, Woodson entered the game against the Spartans hoping to grab its first win of the season.  Unfortunately for the Cavs, turnovers piled up early and often, preventing Woodson from staying in the game.

The Spartans showed they came to play from the outset. They took the opening kick and moved down field for a quick score. The drive almost stalled at one point near midfield when the Spartans fumbled, but Woodson couldn’t recover the loose ball and West Springfield never looked back.  Tyler Sutter capped the capped the drive with a short touchdown run, one of three scores he had on the night.

Woodson turned the ball over on its first two offensive series and the Spartans capitalized on both miscues, running out to a 20 – 0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The second period was no kinder to the Cavaliers. West Springfield racked-up another three scores before half, including a fumble returned for a touchdown by Frank Sturek.

Woodson almost broke through on the scoreboard before halftime when Marcus Dash returned a kickoff for an apparent touchdown. It was not to be, however. A Cavalier penalty late in the run nullified the score and pushed Woodson back to the Spartans’ 30-yard line.  Woodson failed to cash-in on the good field position and the teams went into half with the Spartans leading 41 – 0.

West Springfield capped the scoring early in the third quarter when Jonathan Dunn bolted 75 yards for a score. The scoring run, also Dunn’s third of the game, put West Springfield ahead by what stood as the eventual final score of 48 – 0.

Woodson did threatened again later in the game, but a short touchdown pass from Stephen Tapp to Bryce Mauro was called back due to an illegal block.

Such was Woodson’s fortune on Homecoming. Turnovers and penalties kept the Cavaliers from competing.

The Cavaliers travel to Alexandria next Thursday to take on T.C. Williams.   With better ball security and a few breaks Woodson hopes to claim win number one against the “Mighty, Mighty Titans.”
