Police Investigate Death Of Inmate At Fairfax County Jail

FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA — Detectives from the Major Crimes Bureau of the Fairfax County Police Department are investigating the in-custody death of 37-year-old inmate Michael Becraft, Maryland, according to a police release.

Around 4:54 a.m. on Monday, Becraft was found unresponsive in his cell in the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center (ADC). He was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, but he was pronounced dead. After conducting an autopsy on Tuesday, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner determined there were no signs of foul play, although results remain pending.

Becraft has been held by the Fairfax County Sheriff's Office in the ADC since Dec. 9. He was being held without bond and was facing multiple charges, including strangulation resulting in wounding/bodily injury, simple assault against a family member, and abduction by force, according to a Sheriff's Office release.

FCPD detectives are working with the sheriff's deputies to investigate the circumstances surrounding Becraft's death.
