Police Officer Dies On Duty After Suffering Medical Emergency

Sergeant​ George Moskowitz, who had a long career with the Fairfax City and Fairfax County police departments, died New Year's Eve.

FAIRFAX CITY, VA — A Fairfax City Police sergeant died New Year's Eve after he suffered a medical emergency while on duty, the police department said Wednesday. Sergeant George Moskowitz was an eight-year veteran with the Fairfax City Police Department after retiring from a long career with the Fairfax County Police Department.

"It is with great sadness that we mourn the unexpected loss of Sergeant George Moskowitz. Sgt Moskowitz suffered from a medical emergency while on duty yesterday," the police department tweeted.

Black bunting and a police crusier have been placed outside of the city's police headquarters to honor Moskowitz, WJLA reported Jan. 1.

Fairfax City's mayor and city council issued a statement Wednesday night, expressing their deep sadness on the death of Moskowitz.

"Sgt. Moskowitz's passing is a great loss to the city, and our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, his daughters, and his son," Mayor David Meyer and the city council said. "We are fortunate that Sgt. Moskowitz chose to continue his distinguished career in law enforcement for the past eight years with the City of Fairfax Police Department, after working with the Fairfax County Police Department for 25 years."
