The Woodson Cavaliers traveled a short four mile bus ride to Robinson Secondary on Friday night to take on the Rams at Coffey Stadium. Despite the close proximity of the two schools, the Cavs and traditional football power Robinson rarely meet on the gridiron.
Based on Friday’s outcome, that might be a good thing for Woodson, as the Rams pulled away from the Cavs in the second half en route to a 35 – 3 win.
The loss drops Woodson's record to 0 -2, while Robinson moves to 1 - 1 on the season.

As was the case in last week’s loss to Fairfax, the Cavaliers played hard-hitting competitive football against the Rams, but they again could not sustain drives on offense. Meanwhile, on the defensive side of the ball Woodson had difficulty slowing the Rams’ running game, despite the absence of Robinson’s All-Met running back, Joe Wilson.
The Cavs managed to prevent the Rams’ offense from breaking off any long scoring plays, but Robinson’s steady running game led by Avyn Johnson and QB Jack Rowlett ultimately produced four time-consuming scoring drives.

Robinson jumped in front on the scoreboard 7 – 0 on the game’s second possession when Rowlett scored from a yard out midway through the first quarter.
Woodson followed soon afterward with its lone scoring drive of the evening. Starting from their own 20 yard line following a Rams’ missed field goal attempt, the Cavs drove deep into Robinson territory. The drive, buoyed by 53 yard pass completion from QB Patrick Riley to Conor McLaughlin, eventually resulted in a 35 yard field goal by Jacob Oleyar. The kick narrowed the score to 7 – 3 early in the second quarter.
But that was as close as the Cavs would get. Robinson’s defense shut down Woodson in the second half, included returning a fumbled lateral for a short touchdown to seal the scoring 35 – 3 early in the fourth quarter.
The Cavaliers have a bye next week before returning home to host the West Potomac Wolverines at Woodson’s Pat Cunningham Stadium on Friday September 20th. Each with 0 – 2 records, the Cavaliers and Wolverines will both enter the game looking for their first win of the 2013 season.
