Ventilator Use For Virginia Coronavirus Patients Remains Steady

The Virginia Health Department on Tuesday reported 27 more coronavirus deaths and 1,002 new cases of the coronavirus.

RICHMOND, VA — The Virginia Health Department on Tuesday reported 27 more coronavirus deaths and 1,002 new cases, bringing the state's death toll to 1,041 and the total number of cases to 32,145. Another 82 hospitalizations were reported since Monday, bringing the cumulative total to 3,904 hospitalizations.

As of Tuesday, the VDH reported 201,183 polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests had been conducted in the state, representing a 14.9 percent 7-day positivity rate. Including antibody tests, the state reported 224,991 tests have been conducted in the state.

Last week, the state health department said it classifies positive PCR test results as confirmed cases. The Virginia Department of Health said antibody testing had increased in the past three weeks but make up less than nine percent of all tests.

As of Monday, the number of PCR tests performed was 194,677, while the total including PCR and antibody tests was 218,393.

On Tuesday, the Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association reported 1,497 people with pending or confirmed coronavirus test results were currently hospitalized, down from 1,502 on Monday. A total of 4,271 COVID-19 patients have been discharged from hospitals, up from 4,107 on Monday.

On Tuesday, 199 COVID-19 patients were using ventilators, up from 194 on Monday. Among all hospital patients in Virginia, there are 638 ventilators in use of the 2,947 available ventilators in hospitals, representing 22-percent use in Virginia. No hospitals are experiencing difficulty obtaining or restocking protective gear or other medical supplies in the next 72 hours.

Fairfax County, the state's most populous locality with more than 1.1 million people, has the most cases with 8,020 and 292 deaths. On Tuesday, the Fairfax County Health Department put out a request for sewn cloth face covering donations. The cloth face covering donations will support nonprofit health care providers and the low-income client households they serve.

  • 22003, Fairfax County: 714 of 1,923 tested
  • 22204, Arlington County: 670 of 1,895 tested

  • Alexandria: 1,544 cases, 168 hospitalizations, 34 deaths; increase of 34 cases and six hospitalizations

  • Fairfax County: 8,020 cases, 1,113 hospitalizations, 292 deaths; increase of 177 cases, 13 hospitalizations and eight deaths
  • Fairfax City: 47 cases, six hospitalizations, three deaths
  • Falls Church: 44 cases, nine hospitalizations, four deaths
  • Loudoun County: 1,527 cases, 140 hospitalizations, 48 deaths; increase of 41 cases and one hospitalization
