Clifton May Be Looking for Town Manager

The town council is considering adding a town manager position

The Clifton town council is considering hiring a town manager for the next fiscal year.

“We would want someone who could help with mostly the administrative duties,” said Clifton mayor Bill Hollaway. “Right now, we rely mostly on volunteers.”

The town’s six-person council does not take a salary. In the upcoming proposed budget which is currently going through the approval process, the council budgeted for a town manager or administrator part-time position. The manager would be paid $24,000 a year.

“Though we can’t afford someone full time, we hope to find someone who is retired and would like to work part time,” Hollaway said.

The town has had several public workshops and hearings on the proposed budget over the last month. At Tuesday’s public meeting on the budget, no residents commented on the proposal, though council members discussed the matter.

“We want someone who has expertise in administrative duties, but they will not be setting policy,” said Council Member Wayne Nickum.

Council members stressed at the meeting that the council would still be making key decisions for the town.

Nationally, a full-time city manager can make anywhere from $40,000 to upwards of $150,000 per year, depending on experience and the population of the city.

The town council plans to approve the budget in a future meeting, though the date for that meeting has not yet been set. The fiscal year begins on July 1.
