MLK Jr. Day 2023 Program, What's Open, Closed In Falls Church
A Martin Luther King Jr. Day program will return to Falls Church, along with various closures for the federal holiday.

FALLS CHURCH, VA — On Monday, there will be an observance in Falls Church to honor the life and legacy of civil rights icon Martin Luther King Jr. Closures will also be in place for the federal holiday.
Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, Jan. 16 is a federal holiday and a federally observed day of service. Falls Church City Council issued a proclamation encouraging residents to participate in civic, community, and service projects to honor Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy.
The Tinner Hill Heritage Foundation will hold its annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Action and Justice. At 10 a.m. attendees will meet for speeches at the Tinner Hill Civil Rights Monument at Tinner Hill Road. That will be followed by a march down S. Washington Street to the Falls Church Episcopal.

At 12 p.m., a panel discussion called "How to be an Anti-Racist" will be held at Falls Church Episcopal. Panelists will include Arlington County and Falls Church Commonwealth's Attorney Parisa Dehghani-Tafti and Rev. Canon Dr. J. Lee Hill Jr., Episcopal Diocese of Virginia Canon for Racial Justice and Healing. After the discussion, attendees can connect with local organizations for volunteer opportunities.
Drivers should expect road closures during the march from 11 a.m. to noon on S. Washington St between E. Broad St. and S. Maple Ave; Wallace St. between S. Maple Ave and S. Washington St.; Hillwood Ave. between E. Annandale Rd. and S. Washington St.; W. Annandale Rd. between S. Maple Ave. and S. Washington St.; E. Annandale Rd. between Hillwood Ave. and S. Washington St.; and E. Fairfax St. between Douglass Ave. and S. Washington St. Tinner Hill Rd. between S. Maple Ave. and S. Washington St. will be closed starting at 10 a.m.

Here's what's open and closed in Falls Church for Martin Luther King Day on Monday, Jan. 16:
City of Falls Church government offices: Closed Monday Jan. 16.
Fairfax County government offices: County government offices are closed on Jan. 16.
Courts: Arlington County and Fairfax County courts are closed on Jan. 16.
Falls Church City Public Schools: Closed on Monday, Jan. 16.
Fairfax County Public Schools: Closed on Monday, Jan. 16.
Community centers: The Falls Church Community Center is open from 8:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Jan. 16. Fairfax County Neighborhood and Community Services' community centers are closed on Jan. 14 and 16.
Virginia DMV: All DMV customer service centers will be closed on Jan. 16.
Fairfax Connector: On Jan. 16, Fairfax Connector will run holiday weekday service. All routes operate regular weekday service except Routes 231, 232, 335, 393, 394, 395, 396, 432, 461, 494, 495, 599, 624, 634, 697, 698, 699, 715, 722, 724 834 and 835, which will not operate. Libraries: Mary Riley Styles Public Library and all Fairfax County Public Library locations are closed on Jan. 16.
Metro: Metrorail will run on a Saturday holiday schedule from 5 a.m. to midnight. From Jan. 14 to 16, there will be single tracking on the Red Line between Silver Spring and Forest Glen. See more information about weekend Metro service here.
Post offices: Closed on Jan. 16.
Trash and recycling collection: City of Falls Church collections happen on Wednesdays. Fairfax County collection customers have no change in collections during the week of Jan. 16. Private collection customers should check schedules with their hauler.
Trash and recycling centers: The I-66 Transfer Station (4618 West Ox Road, Fairfax) and the I-95 Landfill Complex (9850 Furnace Road, Lorton) are open regular hours on Jan. 16.
