Germanna Needs Classroom Space After Earthquake Damage

College president says one building sustained significant damage after yesterday's earthquake and there's a need for classroom space for the semester.

Updated Aug. 26 10:30 a.m.: Germanna Community College has announced plans to resume classes after sustaining earthquake damage Tuesday to one of the buildings on its Fredericksburg campus. All classes will continue. On Aug. 30, Germanna nursing and dental hygiene students will resume classes. All other students will resume classes on Sept. 6.  The college will be posting details on classroom changes to its Web site schedule at germanna.edu. Structural damage to the Earl V. Dickinson Building is serious enough that Germanna President David A. Sam expects it to be out of commission for at least the Fall semester.

Update 3:11 p.m.: Germanna Community College will remain closed through Saturday as a result of earthquake damage to the Dickinson Building at the Fredericksburg Campus. The building won't be used for at least the rest of the semester because of structural problems.  There will be no classes for the remainder of this week at any Germanna location or online. All classes will resume—most on the same campuses with a new start date, to be announced shortly. Student services such as financial aid, counseling and the book store will resume prior to classes starting up again.

Germanna President Dr. David Sam's email states that the college needs about 25 spaces in an alternative classroom, along with space for science and computer labs. About 50 office employees are displaced and will need space, too, Sam said.

Anyone who can help is asked to contact Germanna Vice President Jeanne Wesley at (540)820-5564 or JWesley@germanna.edu.

Sam has been posting updates on his Facebook page and he recently said that all buildings are being inspected for structural integrity. He posted that only the Dickinson Building has any significant damage.

Faculty and students can pick up personal belongings from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today. All personal belongings must be removed before 9 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 26 and a security escort is required to enter any campus building.
