UMW Loses Baseball Coach To George Washington University
Tom Sheridan was the first baseball coach for University of Mary Washington and turned it into a winning club.
will conduct a national search to replace Tom Sheridan, the school's first and only baseball coach who has resigned to become the associate head coach for George Washington University's Division I baseball program.
UMW's atheltic director Ken Tyler made the announcement Aug. 10. Tyler said he is sad to see the coach leave, but happy for Sheridan's big opportunity at George Washington.
“Coach Sheridan literally built the UMW baseball program from scratch, and, over the last 25 years, has turned it into a consistent winner on the conference, regional, and national level," Tyler said in a prepared statement. "More importantly, he has made a real difference in the lives of the countless young men he has mentored and coached."

George Washington University also made the announcement on Aug. 10. The Colonials are still searching for a head coach after firing Steve Mrowka this past season after the team's seventh-straight losing season.
Sheridan, 56, helped launch UMW's baseball program in 1988. He won 579 games as the head coach, which puts him 40th all time in NCCAA Division III history. Sheridan coached the UMW baseball team to an amazing 10 conference championships and 11 NCAA tournament appearances. He has won the conference's coach of the year award nine times. UMW's baseball team had a winning record in 22 of Sheridan's 25 seasons, but it finished 13-20-1 this year.

When he was an assistant at James Madison University, the team advanced to the 1983 College World Series, but lost to Texas and then Stanford.
