Action Sought On Abandoned Shopping Carts In Little Hunting Creek

Proposed state legislation would make businesses responsible for cleaning up their shopping carts.

MOUNT VERNON, VA—Abandoned shopping carts in Little Hunting Creek are a problem volunteers have tackled for over a decade. Friends of Little Hunting Creek have cleaned up hundreds of shopping carts along with other trash in the creek, situated between Fort Hunt and Mount Vernon.

The group and the Route 1 corridor's state Sen. Scott Surovell are pushing for more action. The state senator once again proposed a bill allowing localities to make businesses responsible for cleaning up abandoned carts, WAMU reported. Surovell contends that major retailers can afford lock systems to prevent shopping carts from leaving the property.
