Area Under Severe Thunderstorm Watch

Potentially heavy downpours could lead to flash flooding.

The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for the Washington metropolitan area, including all of Fairfax County.

The watch is active until 10 p.m. Tuesday. The weather service has also issued a hazardous weather outlook for Northern Virginia counties adjacent to the Potomac River. Thunderstorms are expected and may become severe, with the potential for damaging winds and large hail.

Also, a flash flood warning has been issued for western and central Fairfax County and western Arlington County. At 8:05 p.m., National Weather Service doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producing torrential rainfall along a line extending from Great Falls to Fairfax, moving east at 15 miles per hour.
