(ALNV volunteers help students choose books at Build A Child's Library event)

Assistance League® of Northern Virginia (ALNV), a non-profit organization devoted to supporting local children in low-income families, held Build a Child’s Library events at Dogwood Elementary in Reston on September 25 and at Lynbrook Elementary on October 8.

These events, fully funded by ALNV, allow each child in the school to select a free book. ALNV distributed 685 books at Dogwood Elementary and 556 books at Lynbrook.

The books covered a wide variety of age-appropriate topics suitable for every reading level, from pre-K to 6 grade. Members helped students select books while others stamped “This Book Belongs to” in the book and helped students write their names. Each book included a special ALNV bookmark.

Throughout the year, ALNV provides weekend food packets for children facing food insecurity without school-provided meals, as well as new seasonal-appropriate clothing, socks, underwear, and coats. ALNV also provides books for all children in partner schools regardless of need, along with reading tutoring in several of the partner schools.

Assistance League® of Northern Virginia is an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) organization with a mission to feed, clothe, educate, and support local children from low-income families. ALNV receives no federal, state, or local funding, relying on fundraising, donations, grants, and partner support to help children’s basic needs.
