Both Rec Centers In Fairfax County's Richmond Highway Corridor To Be Temporarily Closed

MOUNT VERNON, VA — Both of the Richmond Highway corridor's recreation centers will be closed at the same time as George Washington Rec Center prepares for a temporary closure.

Mount Vernon Rec Center at 2017 Belle View Blvd, Alexandria, VA, is already closed for a multi-year renovation and expansion project. In 2025, the facility is expected to reopen with a second ice rink, two-story fitness center, indoor track, new pool and more.

For regular users of the Mount Vernon Rec Center, another nearby option during the closure has been the George Washington Rec Center at 8426 Old Mount Vernon Road, Alexandria, VA. But the Fairfax County Park Authority recently announced the facility would be closed from July 24 to Aug. 18.

"We understand the inconvenience that comes with temporary closures of this nature, but the George Washington Rec Center is in need of some tender, loving care and we have identified this as the most opportune time to get that work done," said Cindy Walsh, director of the Fairfax County Park Authority’s park services division. "We appreciate the understanding and patience of the public during this closure and look forward to delivering an improved product when all is said and done."

Fairfax County's recreation center pools typically undergo deep cleaning and maintenance work every two years. Maintenance work planned at George Washington Rec Center includes replacing the existing sand filtration system, replacing lobby doors, re-tiling showers, updating the party room and deep cleaning the pool deck.

Recreation center members can use other park authority rec centers, including the Franconia Rec Center at 6601 Telegraph Road, Alexandria, VA. The Franconia Rec Center offers a pool, fitness room, gym and more.
