Combustibles Ignited by Proximity to Gas
Fireplace Left on Overnight Cause Old Town House Fire

For Immediate Release: September 16, 2020

On Wednesday, September 16, at approximately 6:15 a.m., a fire alarm was dispatched for a residence in the 600 block of S. St. Asaph St. The alarm was quickly changed to a residential building fire. Upon arrival, units reported smoke and fire showing from the rear of the building at the roof
level, and a second alarm was immediately dispatched.

The fire spread from a 3rd floor screened porch area and burned through the roof, damaging a neighbor’s roof as well. Crews quickly made entry and worked to extinguish the fire. Fire marshals conducted an origin and cause investigation and determined that the fire was accidental and originated on
the 3rd floor screened porch where combustibles ignited due to close proximity to a gas fireplace that was accidentally left on overnight. The home sustained an estimated $110,000 in damages.

The residents advised that smoke alarms alerted them to the fire, and they were able to evacuate before units arrived. No residents or first responders were injured as a result of the incident. Residents were able to confirm alternative accommodations on their own, and their neighbors were
able to reoccupy their home at the conclusion of the incident.
