Drunk Driver Nearly Runs Over Officer In Hybla Valley

The drunk driver would have hit the officer if he didn't step away in time. The officer was making a traffic stop in Hybla Valley.

HYBLA VALLEY, VA—An officer had a close call when a drunk driver nearly hit him Friday night during a Hybla Valley traffic stop.

Police reported the drunk driver's car struck the police cruiser's car as the officer was in the middle of a traffic stop at Sherwood Hall Lane and Francis Drive. The officer was writing a citation and had to move aside to avoid being hit. The incident happened around 8:30 p.m., according to FOX5DC. Images police posted on social media show the car door smashed.

The suspect, Robert Jones Jr., 73, of Alexandria, was stopped and arrested. He was was charged with DWI, his 2nd offense within 10 years, and DWI refusal of blood or breath test, another second offense.

The officer was patrolling as part of Fairfax County Police's increased crackdown on drunk driving. Police remind residents to not drink and drive especially as drivers begin to travel for the holidays.
