Halloween can be the worst time for cavities. Tips to help keep your kids' teeth healthy.

It's that time of year again parents.

As we all know, Halloween and candy go hand in hand; children knock on doors and friendly neighbors place sugary treats into bags and other containers. While making the trick-or-treat rounds, they almost certainly munch on treats. Once home, many children are allowed to eat as much as they like. Unfortunately, children often go to bed on Halloween night without flossing or brushing their teeth.

The leftover candy is consumed on a near-daily basis; this contributes to a rise in the number of cavities during the year. A cavity is permanent tooth damage caused acids produced by oral bacteria. Depending on the strength or weakness of the enamel, a cavity can take place in a little as a month, most often two or three months. Once the acid has broken through the enamel, the soft part of the tooth known as the dentin is consumed much quicker. Without dental care, the diseased tissue can infect the nerve of the tooth, necessitating a root canal.

Most cavities are preventable by exercising proper oral hygiene, and by scheduling regular check ups with your Alexandria dentist. During the Halloween and holiday season, it is especially important for people of all ages to take care of their teeth. Parents and children can use the following tips to keep their smiles beautiful and teeth healthy.

•       Since tooth-damaging acids take up to 20 minutes to form, trick-or-treaters should brush, floss and use oral fluoride a half hour before leaving the house. To allow the fluoride to give the best protection, do not eat or drink during this period.
•       As soon as children get home and have a few pieces of candy, they should brush, floss and use fluoride rinse again before bed.
•       Children and adults should carry a toothbrush to use after lunch; no toothpaste is necessary. Food debris and plaque removal is the goal. At home, the full procedure of brush, floss and oral fluoride rinse should take place immediately after dinner; repeat if any snacks or candy is eaten before bedtime.

Taking the time to pay attention to oral health during the Halloween season is easy while enjoying the treats. The results are healthier teeth, brighter smiles and fewer cavities.
