Heavy Fort Hunt Fire Displaces Residents

One person was evaluated for smoke inhalation, according to Fairfax County Fire and Rescue.

FORT HUNT, VA—A fire originating near a sun room caused extensive damage at a Fort Hunt home Monday, the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department says.

Units from Fairfax County and Alexandria responded to the 1100 block of Arcturus Lane around 2 a.m. Monday, Oct. 15. Firefighters encountered heavy fire from the back of the one-story home and quickly worked to put it out on the exterior. The fire extended into the home and attic, and that was extinguished as well.

Five people and two dogs were inside when the fire occurred. Smoke alarms woke the residents, leading the homeowner to find the fire, evacuate. He helped two escape safely through a basement window before firefighters arrived. Two people visitors to the home at the time.

One resident was evaluated for smoke inhalation but refused to be taken to the hospital.

Fire investigators traced the fire back to the accidental ignition of charcoal briquettes under the sun room. Damages are initially estimated to be $237,500.

Three people were displaced because of the fire. Red Cross Services were declined.
