HUNTINGTON, VA — Metro riders will see changes at the Huntington Metro due to construction at the south entrance starting on Aug. 19. The south entrance will be closed for an estimated five months. In addition, the south bus loop will be closed for approximately two weeks, which will move buses to temporary stops.

Metro will replace three escalators at the south entrance, requiring the entrance to be closed. The current escalators include one of standard width and two of single width. The escalators had been overhauled last year to extend their life until the upcoming project. The escalator trusses will be taken out and replaced in sections, and the escalator configuration will be demolished and redone to install two full-width escalators.

The project had been moved forward by a year due to low ridership. The south entrance usually has 400 entries on weekdays, which is a smaller portion than the entries seen before the pandemic.

During the south entrance closure, riders can access the station through the north entrance escalators and elevator. Parking is encouraged in the north garade, but ADA-accessible shuttles will be provided between the north and south entrance every 10 to 15 minutes during Metrorail hours.
