MLK Jr. Day 2023 Program, What's Open, Closed In Greater Alexandria

Service projects and programs will be held, along with various closures for the Martin Luther King Jr. federal holiday.

BELLE HAVEN, VA — On Monday, residents can honor the life and legacy of civil rights icon Martin Luther King Jr. with service projects and other events around Fairfax County. Closures will also be in place for the federal holiday.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, Jan. 16 is a federal holiday and a federally observed day of service. Some projects around greater Alexandria will include the MLK Day of Service at Belle Haven Park/Dyke Marsh on Jan. 16 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and MLK Day of Service Invasive Kudzu Removal on the Mount Vernon Trail. County-affiliated events will be held in Reston and McLean.

In Alexandria, the 50th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative Program will be held Sunday at 4 p.m. at the George Washington Masonic National Memorial, 101 Callahan Drive, Alexandria, VA.

The event, held by the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Planning Committee, celebrates the legacy of King. There will be food and drinks, music, and a panel of experts sharing why King's message and example are still relevant. Residents can RSVP to attend the program and donate to support it.

Fairfax County government offices: Closed on Monday, Jan. 16.

Fairfax County Public Schools: Closed on Monday, Jan. 16.

Courts: Fairfax County courts are closed on Jan. 16.

Community centers: Fairfax County Neighborhood and Community Services' community centers are closed on Jan. 14 and 16.

Department of Motor Vehicles: All DMV customer service centers are closed Jan. 16.

Fairfax Connector: On Jan. 16, Fairfax Connector will run holiday weekday service. All routes operate regular weekday service except Routes 231, 232, 335, 393, 394, 395, 396, 432, 461, 494, 495, 599, 624, 634, 697, 698, 699, 715, 722, 724 834 and 835, which will not operate. George Washington's Mount Vernon: Open daily, including holidays.

Huntley Meadows Visitor Center: Open 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Jan. 16.

Libraries: All Fairfax County Public Library locations are closed on Jan. 16.

Metro: Metrorail will run on a Saturday holiday schedule from 5 a.m. to midnight. From Jan. 14 to 16, there will be single tracking on the Red Line between Silver Spring and Forest Glen. See more information about weekend Metro service here.

Post offices: Closed on Jan. 16.

Recreation centers: Fairfax County rec centers are open for regular hours on Jan. 16. Mount Vernon Rec Center is closed for renovations.

Trash and recycling: Fairfax County collection customers have no change in collections during the week of Jan. 16. Private collection customers should check schedules with their hauler.

Trash and recycling centers: The I-66 Transfer Station (4618 West Ox Road, Fairfax) and the I-95 Landfill Complex (9850 Furnace Road, Lorton) are open regular hours on Jan. 16.
