MOUNT VERNON, VA — Construction on a new trail along Mount Vernon Memorial Highway will kick off Wednesday in Mount Vernon.

Mount Vernon District Supervisor Dan Storck and the Fairfax County Department of Transportation and Fairfax County Department of Public Works and Environmental Services will host the groundbreaking at 10 a.m. Wednesday at George Washington's Gristmill, 5513 Mount Vernon Memorial Highway, Alexandria, VA. The project will create a trail along missing segments of the Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail between Richmond Highway and Southwood Drive. This will provide continuous access for pedestrians and bicyclists along Mount Vernon Memorial Highway from Richmond Highway to the Mount Vernon Estates.

The 10-foot-wide path will be separated from the roadway and include a pedestrian bridge over Dogue Creek. Existing pedestrian crossings will be improved through marked crosswalks and curb ramps compliant with the American with Disabilities Act.
