One Huntington Metro Garage Suddenly Closes

The garage is set to be demolished during Metro's summer 2019 station shutdowns.

HUNTINGTON, VA—One of Huntington Metro's three parking garages has suddenly shut down, Metro announced. Effective Friday, Aug. 10, the south parking garage is closed ahead of demolition in summer 2019.

Metro said in a news release the 300-space garage "has reached the end of its useful life." Last week engineers found areas of concrete that could come loose under certain conditions. There were no structural concerns identified, but Metro says the decision to close the garage is in the interest of public safety. Parking had been limited to certain areas of the garage since 2015.

Metro anticipates enough additional parking is available at the other two garage—the middle and north garages. The south entrance and pedestrian walkway to the station remain open.

The garage will be demolished during the summer 2019 station shutdowns as Metro repairs outdoor platforms. Blue and Yellow line stations south of Reagan National Airport will be shut down for the maintenance from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

Metro is in the initial stages of planning to rebuild the garage.
