Paving, Restriping Changes Proposed In Mount Vernon District
Transportation officials propose the addition of bike lanes on portions of roads.
HUNTINGTON, VA — A number of road configuration changes in the Mount Vernon District are proposed as part of the 2021 Paving and Restriping Program by the Virginia Department of Transportation.
VDOT repaves hundreds of roads in Fairfax County each year. This program is done in collaboration with the Fairfax County Department of Transportation to implement parts of the county's comprehensive plan to improve traffic safety for different road users. Improvements added during repaving can include bike lanes, parking lanes, crosswalks and more. Paving work is expected to begin in April and finish in November.
VDOT and the Fairfax County Department of Transportation will hold a virtual meeting on the proposed paving and restriping changes for the Mount Vernon District on March 15 at 7 p.m. Residents can also provide online comments through March 29.

Here are the proposed changes in the Mount Vernon District:
- Old Richmond Highway from Huntington Avenue to Richmond Highway, Huntington: Bike lanes are proposed and on-street parking would be removed on the southeast side of the street. On-street parking would be maintained on the west side of the street. The road currently has one travel lane in each direction and on-street parking.
- Whernside Street from Telegraph Road to Pohick Road, Newington: A bike lane in one direction is proposed. On-street parking will be maintained.
- Cinder Bed Road from Newington Road to the end of the road, Newington: VDOT and FCDOT are proposing to add bike lanes, including repurposing underutilized travel lanes in sections where the road has more than two travel lanes.
- Laurel Crest Drive/Dudley Drive from Hooes Road to Outlet Road/Golf Course Entrance, Lorton: Existing shoulders are proposed to be converted to bike lanes where on-street parking is not needed or desired. This road has one travel lane in each direction with turn lanes on some parts.
No other roads will be added to the preliminary 2021 paving schedule. Exact start dates will be advertised 10 days before work starts. Work on neighborhood roads will typically happen between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., while overnight road work could occur for interstates and some primary routes.
