Pedestrian Killed On Richmond Highway In Fort Belvoir Area

A crash involving a pedestrian closed northbound Richmond Highway in the Fort Belvoir area Thursday morning, according to police.

FORT BELVOIR, VA — A pedestrian was killed on Richmond Highway in the Fort Belvoir area Thursday, according to Fairfax County Police.

Officers responded around 6:49 a.m. to the crash on Richmond Highway at the Tully Gate entrance to Fort Belvoir. Police determined the pedestrian was crossing Richmond Highway from the median to the eastern side against the pedestrian signal. The driver of a 2015 GMC Terrain heading north on Richmond Highway had a green light and the right of way when the pedestrian was struck, police say.

Rescue personnel responded and pronounced the pedestrian dead on scene. The pedestrian was identified as Melodie Kiem, 53, of Fort Belvoir.

The driver remained at the scene of the crash. Police do not believe alcohol or speed were factors in the crash.

The investigation remains active. Police will present investigation findings to the Office of the Commonwealth's Attorney for review.
