Pedestrian Killed On Richmond Highway In Gum Springs: Police

Fairfax County's 12th pedestrian fatality of the year was reported Thursday night on Richmond Highway, according to police.

HYBLA VALLEY, VA — A pedestrian was killed in a crash on Richmond Highway in the Gum Springs area Thursday night, according to Fairfax County Police.

Around 8:08 p.m., a pedestrian was crossing Richmond Highway outside a crosswalk from east to west near Napper Road. A 2018 Ford Mustang heading north on Richmond Highway struck the pedestrian in the roadway, police say.

The pedestrian was taken to the hospital, where he died of his injuries. Police identified him as Andres Romero, 57, of Alexandria.

This was the 12th pedestrian fatality in Fairfax County this year. By this time last year, there were 14 pedestrian fatalities.

Detectives do not believe speed or alcohol are factors in the crash for the driver. Police are investigating if alcohol was a factor for the pedestrian.

A speed study is currently being conducted for Richmond Highway between the Capital Beltway and Belvoir Road. The current speed limit is 45, and the study will determine if the speed limit should be kept or decreased.
