Route 1 Corridor ZIP Code Among Top For Coronavirus Cases

The corridor's communities have vast differences in cases and testing numbers, according to new Virginia Department of Health data.

HYBLA VALLEY, VA — New data from the Virginia Department of Health shows cases of the new coronavirus and testing totals for Route 1 corridor ZIP codes and others around the state. The Hybla Valley-Groveton ZIP code has the 10th highest number of cases among Virginia ZIP codes.

The Virginia Department of Health started providing coronavirus data by ZIP code this week. Hybla Valley and Groveton's 22306 ZIP code has 329 cases. Health officials reported Friday that 885 people in the ZIP code have been tested for the coronavirus, giving the ZIP code a 37 percent positive test rate.

Case and testing numbers vary in the Route 1 corridor's zip codes. In Belle Haven's 22307 ZIP code, there have been 36 cases and 215 completed tests. Fort Hunt's 22308 ZIP code has 23 cases and 150 completed tests. The 22303 ZIP code, covering Huntington and surrounding area, has 77 cases and 375 completed tests. A few other areas of Fairfax County have higher case numbers than Hybla Valley/Groveton, according to ZIP code case data. The 22003 ZIP code in Annandale has 481 cases among 1,352 tested, while Springfield's 22150 has 374 cases and 881 tested. However, the Bailey's Crossroads and Lake Barcroft communities trailed Hybla Valley and Groveton with 315 cases and 736 tests completed.

Fairfax County leads Virginia localities with 5,338 cases overall, as of Friday. There have been 227 deaths among new coronavirus cases in the county. The Fairfax County Health Department cited three reasons for cases continuing to increase: significant community-wide transmission in the region, increased commercial lab capacity bolstering testing, and probable cases being counted. A probable case means a person is symptomatic and has a known exposure to COVID-19.

Out-of-state residents tested in Virginia are not counted in zip code data but are reflected in the state's overall testing data. For privacy reasons, zip codes with case counts between one and four cases are listed as "suppressed."
