School Employee Charged with Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor: Police

Patrol officers from the Mount Vernon District Station arrested a Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) teacher Sunday, following an investigation that stemmed from him being found with a 16-year old female in a vehicle parked in a parking lot on Richmond Highway, police said.

Michael A. Sweeney, 44, of Woodbridge, was charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor, police said. Sweeney and the victim were discovered in a vehicle that was parked in the parking lot of the 8800 block of Richmond Highway, according to police.

The victim is a 16-year-old juvenile from the Alexandria area of Fairfax County, police said. Detectives from the Child Exploitation Unit assumed the investigation, according to police.

Sweeney is listed in an online Fairfax County Public Schools directory as a Technology Education Teacher at Whitman Middle School. An FCPS spokesman confirmed Monday that Sweeney is a teacher at the school.

Police did not say if the teen was a student at the school.
