Springfield Man Dies In Fairfax Jail Hours After Being Taken Into Custody

The man was found unresponsive in his cell Thursday morning, shortly after entering custody. Police said they do not suspect foul play.

FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA — A 38-year-old Springfield man died Thursday morning at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center, just hours after being taken into custody, authorities said.

Brendan Brown was found unresponsive in his single-occupancy cell around 7:25 a.m., according to the Fairfax County Police Department.

Deputies and emergency medical personnel immediately began lifesaving efforts, including CPR, but Brown was pronounced dead.

Brown had been arrested on a public intoxication charge, Fairfax County police told FFXnow. He had been in the custody of the Fairfax County Sheriff's Office since earlier that morning.

Detectives with the police department's Major Crimes Bureau are investigating the death. Police said preliminary findings do not indicate foul play.

The cause and manner of Brown's death have not been released. An autopsy will be performed, according to the sheriff's office.

Brown is the third person to die in the sheriff's office's custody this year, according to FFXnow.

Two other inmates died in August. One died Aug. 9 while receiving hospice care at a local hospital, while another was found unresponsive in his cell Aug. 12 after being held on a trespassing charge.

According to FFXnow, 20 people have died in the sheriff's office's custody since 2017.
