It takes a rare voice to be selected for All-State Choir. According to Hayfield Secondary School’s choral director Walter Krushinski, only 24 students per district are selected for the coveted honor. Heather Evans, a senior at Hayfield, is one of those few. Judged on tone quality, diction, intonation musicianship and sight-reading, where students have 30 seconds to memorize an eight measure melody, Evans passed the test for a second year in a row.
“She is definitely a leader,” Krushinski said. Evans’ has had an interest in music her whole life and has been participating in choir since the seventh grade.

“My parents are both elementary school music teachers…there is a lot of singing in the house,” Evans said.
Judges for the All-State Choir listen to a blind audition meaning they do not see which students are singing. The panel includes local musicians, private voice teachers or elementary, middle or even university level music teachers. Evans says she plans to major in voice performance in college.
“I like a lot of choice music,” she said. “In a choir, you are part of many parts you are making something bigger.
